The Reconstruction of Man in Christ:

The Christian Response to Bioethical Questions

How is a Christian to understand and respond to the prevailing thoughts of their day?  Yes, there are many voices telling Christians to change, to get in touch, to be on the “right side of history”.  What questions should Christians have for the fallen world’s view of the human body and our lives in the flesh?  To respond to their contemporary world, Christians have historically had to think Christologically to understand who they are and their world around them.

The issues that Christians face today are not new. Christians need to know their history.  The issues that confront Christians today have already been addressed in the past.  Of course, each issue is nuanced, but there are guiding principles that can be applied so that a Christian can question the prevailing thoughts of the modern world and remain firm in the faith through all these challenges.

One of the false teachings that Christians have had to respond to has been Gnosticism.  At its heart Gnosticism views the material world, in particular, the human body as evil.  Many of the contemporary issues (questions of sexuality, gender identity, transhumanism) can be linked to a New Gnosticism. This New Gnosticism is rooted in modern science, to answer the problems of the flesh, rather than ancient spiritualism, and sees the human body itself—even the distinction of male and female—to be something that is fundamentally flawed and in need of transformation by human technological power.  How should a Christian respond?

Our Roots Conference Committee has invited Rev. Dr. Robert Weise to come and help guide us into how a Christian should properly respond to these issues.  Dr. Weise talks about issues related to Christian bioethics. Bioethics is the study of controversial ethics brought about by advances in biology and medicine. Bioethicists are concerned with the ethical questions that arise in the relationships among life sciences, biotechnology, medicine, politics, law, and philosophy.  The Committee, is excited to hear from Dr. Weise as he, proclaims, The Reconstruction of Man in Christ: The Christian Response to Bioethical Questions.  We hope that you will be able to join us for this enlightening and topical conference.

The LCMS U chapters of Metro St. Louis area will host the 3rd Roots Conference: The Reconstruction of Man in Christ: The Christian Response to Bioethical Questions, on October 11 and 12, 2019.

Topics to be discussed: The relationship of Science to Theology; The reconstruction of man in a throwaway culture; Specific cultural issues such as: Responding to the New Gnosticism; Transgender and non-binary gender identity; Transhumanism (the theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.)
